Important Update: Student Cell Phone & Personal Device Expectations

Posted Date: 08/24/26 (09:14 AM)

Dear Monroe Families,

Beginning with the 2026–2027 school year, New Jersey requires public school districts to implement new bell-to-bell expectations for student use of personal internet-enabled devices during the regular school day.

The accompanying graphic provides a quick overview of what families and students need to know, including Monroe’s expectations across grades K–4, 5–8, and 9–12.

Cellphone policy update chart detailing permitted phone use by grade level.

Please take a few minutes to review this information with your child before the start of school. Understanding when devices must be turned off and stored—and when their use is permitted—will help students begin the year prepared and avoid violations of the District’s Student Code of Conduct.

For complete information, including grade-level expectations, exceptions and accommodations, school-issued technology, and how to contact your child during the school day, please review the full letter linked below.
