October brings opportunities to thank our school leaders, celebrate our community’s cultures and histories, and raise awareness of issues that affect many families. We invite you to join us by sharing your experiences, learning something new, or starting a conversation with your children.
During National Principals Month, we thank the principals of our six schools for the care, commitment, and leadership they bring to their work each day. If a principal has helped your child or supported your family, a short note letting them know what that meant is a thoughtful way to show your appreciation.
Disability History & Awareness Month honors the people and advocacy that have helped expand rights and access to education and community life. Learning Disabilities Awareness Month builds understanding of dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, and the instruction and support that can help learners succeed. Down Syndrome Awareness Month celebrates people with Down syndrome and promotes opportunities for friendship, participation, and independence. At home, families can explore books by and about people with disabilities, welcome children’s questions, and learn directly from people sharing their experiences.
If you have questions about how your child is learning or where they may need additional support, reach out to their teacher to share what you’re noticing at home and discuss next steps together.
National Bullying Prevention Month reminds us how much it matters for children to feel comfortable asking for help. Talk together about whom they can turn to at school if they are being bullied or see another student being targeted. Families can reach out to their child’s teacher, school counselor, or Anti-Bullying Specialist and find reporting options on our HIB information page. Our WeTip hotline, 800-782-7463, also accepts anonymous school safety concerns 24 hours a day. For immediate danger, call 911.
When a child’s worries begin to affect daily life, families do not have to navigate finding support alone. Through our district’s partnership with Care Solace, families can receive free, confidential assistance finding mental health providers.
For Cybersecurity Awareness Month, take a few minutes with your child to talk about the accounts, games, and apps they use. Help them create strong, unique passwords, turn on extra sign-in protection where available, and pause before opening unfamiliar links or sharing personal information. Let them know they can come to you if they click something suspicious or receive an upsetting message. Keeping that conversation open makes it easier to ask for help when they need it.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month carries particular meaning for those living with a diagnosis, supporting someone through treatment, or remembering a loved one. Checking in, offering a meal, or helping with an everyday task can be a welcome way to show support.
Our heritage and history recognitions offer opportunities to learn from one another, too. Italian-American Heritage Month celebrates a heritage with deep connections to New Jersey. German-American Heritage Month invites us to explore German American contributions to education, science, industry, and the arts. Polish-American Heritage Month recognizes a culture carried through language, music, traditions, and generations of family life. Filipino American History Month honors the individuals, families, and communities whose work and experiences have helped shape American history.
A family story shared over dinner, a book chosen together, a note of thanks, or a conversation your child feels comfortable starting can make these recognitions meaningful.
To our families, staff, and neighbors, thank you for the care you show our children and one another. We’re grateful for the support you give our schools and the many ways you help children feel welcome, understood, and encouraged here in Monroe Township.
