Starting kindergarten is an exciting milestone for both children and families. A little preparation at home can help your child feel confident, comfortable, and ready for this new chapter.

Ways to Help Prepare Your Child for Kindergarten

  • Establish simple daily routines at home, such as a regular bedtime, wake-up time, and morning routine. A predictable schedule can help children feel more secure and prepared for the school day.

  • Encourage opportunities for social interaction by arranging playdates, visiting the playground, or participating in group activities with other children. These experiences help children practice sharing, taking turns, and interacting with peers.
  • Practice self-help skills that build independence, including putting on a jacket, zipping it up, opening snack items, and handling other simple tasks on their own.

  • Talk positively about kindergarten and help your child understand that school will bring new routines, new people, and new experiences. You can also discuss how their schedule may be different from preschool.

  • Read books together about starting kindergarten and talk about the story afterward. This can help ease nerves, open up conversation, and make the transition feel more familiar and exciting.
