The Monroe Township Board of Education is committed to the optimal development of every student. The District recognizes the link between student wellness and learning. Healthy eating patterns and regular physical activity are essential for students to achieve their full academic potential, full physical and mental growth, and lifelong health and well-being. The Monroe Township Board of Education recognizes that child and adolescent obesity has become a major health concern in the United States. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 18.5% of all children and teens in the US are overweight. The Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010 (HHFKA), funds child nutrition programs and establishes required nutrition standards for school lunch and breakfast programs. In accordance with the requirements of the HHFKA, each school in the district shall implement a Wellness Policy that includes goals for nutrition promotion and education, physical activity, and other school-based activities that promote student wellness.
The Monroe Township Board of Education believes we have a responsibility to improve the health and well-being of our children. Experience shows that schools can be powerful places to cultivate life-long wellness habits for students. To make our school environment healthier, our school formed a School Wellness Committee. In addition, our school wellness committee reviews all board policies and practices pertaining to health and wellness in our schools. The School Wellness Committee is concerned with all aspects of health and wellness such as the management of life threatening allergies, diabetes, safety and security of food served in our schools, and maximizing instructional time.
The purpose of the committee is to bring together representatives from the school community who can help address issues facing the health and well-being of our students. The School District's wellness committee serves the district with representatives from each school serving as members and includes school staff, students, family members, and community members. The school wellness committee (SWC) acts collectively to lead, coordinate, and implement all aspects of the Healthy Schools Program.
While the District Level Wellness Committee oversees all district goals, each school will implement wellness activities unique to each school culture to meet the needs of the school.
We have provided this special area on our website as a resource to our school community. The School Wellness Committee will post information about wellness and nutrition as well as recommendations for making our schools a healthier environment for our students.
