Don’t Get Caught Up in the Summer Slide!

According to the National Summer Learning Association, most students lose about two months of grade level equivalency in mathematical computation skills over the summer months, known as the summer slide (Cooper, 1996). This is why it is important to practice mathematics and language arts skills throughout the summer. This summer, Monroe Township Public Schools invites students to continue working in the supplemental programs they have used in classes all year. These programs are:

5th grade: IXL (ELA) and iReady (Math)

6th-8th grade: IXL (ELA and Math)

Students have been using the IXL (5th-8th grade) and iReady (5th grade) programs in their classrooms as a supplement to the math and language arts core programs. iReady has a personalized instruction feature that differentiates student learning based on the iReady diagnostic and allows students to gain in deficiencies or be enriched in their content knowledge. For more information on iReady, please click here.

On IXL, students work on personalized learning paths that allow them to brush up on skills, enhance their knowledge, or expand their learning content of a topic. For more information on IXL, please click here.

Students currently in grades 5-8 can access both programs through MTPS’s Clever Portal and log in with their district Google credentials.

It is recommended that students spend an hour a week this summer working on each of these supplemental programs. Ideally, this hour should be split up into multiple sessions a week across the resources. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to continue building their mathematical and language arts understanding and minimize summer learning loss.

This year, summer reading will be highly encouraged for students entering grades 5-8, but not required. In September, each ELA classroom will begin the year with a shared reading experience to cultivate a community of learners excited about reading, writing, and thinking. Best wishes for an enjoyable and safe summer!

Sincerely,
